How pandemics spread

Dig into the history of pandemics to learn how viruses and disease spreads and what we can do to stop future outbreaks.

In our increasingly globalized world, a single infected person can board a plane and spread a virus across continents. Mark Honigsbaum describes the history of pandemics and how that knowledge can help halt future outbreaks.

Pathogens are disease causing microorganisms.

They can be spread in many ways; by direct contact, by water or by air. Different pathogens are spread by different mechanisms.

How can transmission be reduced or prevented?
Depending upon which disease you are trying to reduce transmission for, depends upon which methods you need to engage.

Simple hygiene measures can reduce or prevent the spread of many diseases, including flu and the common cold.

To reduce or prevent cholera and other diarrhoea causing pathogens, communities need access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation so that dirty water is not exposed and basic hygiene needs such as washing hands properly, boil water properly and keep surfaces clean.

Malaria and yellow fever both have mosquitos as their vector, and lyme disease uses ticks. A vector is an organism that has an active role in transmitting pathogens from one host to another. To prevent or reduce infection from vector borne diseases, the vectors need to be controlled or humans protected against the vector such as wearing mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeved clothing. Insecticide and spraying techniques can be used to reduce the populations of the vectors, but this is trickier and more expensive.

If a disease is highly contagious, such as rabies, people may need to be isolated to prevent the infection spreading to others.

Vaccinations are also an option for preventing and reducing pathogens. Vaccinations involve putting a small amount of inactive or dead pathogen into the body, which stimulates the body to produce antibodies against the specific pathogen. This enables the body to be prepared to attack and destroy this pathogen if they are infected in future.

Homeostasis – negative and positive feedback (thermoregulation and lactation)

“Although the environment around an organism changes, the organism maintains relatively stable internal conditions. This ability to maintain internal stability, called homeostasis.

For example if a person stands in a cold wintery night or hot sub sahran africn weather , the person is able to maintain a normal internal body temperature 36-37C (97-99F) through homeostasis.
The main mechanism to maintain a homestatic environment is through negative feedback. Negative feedback is where the body senses change and activated mechanisms that negate or reverse it.”

Coping with Labor Pain

Coping with Labor Pain

Dr. Rachel Wykes, an OB/GYN with Lee Health says labor and delivery can cause moms a lot of fear and anxiety. “A new pregnancy brings a lot of emotion, lot of joy, hopefully, and excitement. But there’s also that impending doom of delivery day. They know there’s going to be pain. There’s a lot of uncertainties that surround it. That can promote a lot of anxiety. Anxiety promotes tension, and that can lead to the pain.”

While she says pain is inevitable, there are ways to relieve and cope with it. “Pain relief is really what we’re good at with medicine. Pain relief comes in the form of pharmacologic treatments, so we have IV drugs, we have oral drugs, epidural, spinal, nitrous gas, we have a lot of options for medications,” said Dr. Wykes.

But when it comes to coping with the pain that is up to the mom. “The women who come in with a plan and some tools in their backpack to help cope with the pain, they end up having a more satisfying birth experience,” she said.

Doctors encourage moms to try things like breathing exercises, relaxing music, favorite movies- even essential oils to help them cope with labor pain. “If you can kick back the anxiety and you can kick back your fears; that’s just going to make your whole experience a lot better with less tension and less pain,” said Dr. Wykes.

While it’s important for mothers to go into labor and delivery with a plan, doctors say it’s even more important that moms come in with an open mind. “Your birth plan should be healthy baby, healthy mom,” she said.

Doctors encourage moms to find ways to stay calm and relaxed before delivery and be educated as much as possible on what to expect. All can help mom and baby have a safe and stress-free delivery.
