Infectious Diseases A-Z: Sexually transmitted infections on the rise

Prevention and testing are two ways Mayo Clinic infectious diseases specialist Dr. Pritish Tosh says could help the nation’s staggering rates of sexually transmitted infection. A recent report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that reported cases of STIs are at an unprecedented high in the U.S .

Dr. Tosh offers a couple of theories on the rise, “One of the things that certainly has changed is some of these social media apps whereas it’s now much easier for people who wish to engage in high risk sexual activity with multiple sex partners to find other people who are interested in engaging in high risk sexual activity with multiple sex partners in real time. And so some of these apps have been thought to contribute, and some studies have shown actually to contribute, to rises in sexually transmitted infections.
